Survival of the Dead (2009)

Just a brief word about the new George Romero zombie film. This is just hitting the US shores in theaters and I'm told as part of the Magnolia's on demand service on cable. The film is currently out in the UK and elsewhere on DVD, which is how I saw it.

If you are a fan of the genre and of Romero's earlier films I think you're in for a treat. Once again Romero is at the top of his game as we get the story of some AWOL soldiers who end up on a small island where the two families that live there battle over the right way to handle the reanimated dead.

As usual Romero is interested in more than just monsters and gore and he has a variety of themes running through the film that make this a much more filling film than most horror films.

While this is probably going to be a better known film than most films we deal with here on the blog, the fact that its getting a kind of delayed back door release in the US makes it something I think I should point out to any interested parties since you may not realize its playing near you or on pay per view.

A solid little horror film worth repeated viewings.

(and it has a great final shot about the futility of war)
